Only in cyberspace could I get these large paintings together. During
1993 and 1994, I was interested in military aesthetics. I used
vintage WWII colors, camouflage patterns and identity markings found in rare,
out of print books used by airplane modelers to make these paintings created at
an outdoor painting festival called Art Around the Park. There's
more info about the event on the Art Around the Park 95, 96 and 97 link below.

Blitzkrieg 1993
acrylic on billboard vinyl
74" x 74"
painted in June 1993 for "Art Around the Park"

Tempest 1994
acrylic on billboard vinyl
83" x 110"
painted on June 6, 1994, the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion
June 6, 1944 for "Art Around the Park"
In this painting, I used a motif of alternating black and white stripes
like those painted on the wings of Allied aircraft that flew in the
D-Day invasion. These markings were known as "invasion
stripes." The lettering and British roundel identify the
squadron, nationality, and number of the aircraft. The Hawker "Tempest" was a British made fighter
plane. |
