Blondie at Joey Ramone's 50th birthday party bash in the Spring of
2001. Sadly Joey lost his battle with lymphoma on April 15 just a
month shy of this birthday milestone. During the tribute, many
special guests including CBGB's owner Hilly Kristal, Lenny Kaye and Little
Steven Van Zandt spoke about Joey before Blondie took the stage at about
10 PM. Cheap Trick was the warm up act and the guitar work of Rick Nielson
soared with the vocals of lead singer Robin Zander. Blondie
performed a number of their hits including, "Dreaming," "Hangin'
on the Telephone," and "Maria." The band also did a
cover of Ramone's song "I Wanna be Your Boyfriend" that bubbled
along with just the right rhythm and was reinvented with Deborah
delivering the vocal and was a highlight of the evening. Chris Stein
is on the far left. Leigh Foxx is to the right of Chris. Deborah
Harry is in the center. You can't see Clem Burke but he's back there
and Paul Carbonara is on the far right. Jimi Destri on keyboards is
out of the picture at the far left. This performance was the first
time I saw the band perform live.
More pictures will be added soon.
